Seminar “Banking and financial crisis”

On the afternoon of 18th March 2023, Faculty of Economics had successfully organized an academic seminar “Banking and financial crisis” for students in room A1.808 (Hoa Sen Room) - University of Economics and Law. 

The seminar was attended by Dr. Nguyen Dinh Binh - cell secretary of The Faculty of Economics, Dr. Trinh Hoang Hong Hue - Deputy dean of The Faculty of Economics, guest speaker, lecturers, and students from The Faculty of Economics. 

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hai, who currently works at Department of Employment - Ministry of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs, will serve as the seminar's keynote speaker. Dr. Hai is a senior consultant on economic, financial and labor market policy for Hathaway Policy - a policy consulting firm based in Hanoi. From 2015 to 2019, he was a former Assistant Professor of Economics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). From 2008 to 2015, he lectured at Johns Hopkins University and University of Tennessee - Knoxville.

In his report, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hai provided an overview of the operating mechanism of the banking industry from an economic standpoint, examined the function and role of intermediary banks in the economy,  and discussed the causes of bank collapse through Bernanke's research, the Diamond & Dybvig model (Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2022), the role of the State in managing the banking system and ways to deal with hidden risks. Then, he explained the reasons for the commercial bank Silicon Valley Bank's (SVB) recent collapse, which has drawn comparisons to declare bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers Bank in 2008. 

Practical issues related to the crisis of US banks and domestic banks, many questions about "Is the collapse of SVB a sign of the next mass collapse?" was passionately debated and exchanged between the speaker and students from Faculty of Economics. At the conclusion of the presentation, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hai also provided some helpful experiences and chances to apply for scholarships for 3rd and 4th-year students of Faculty of Economics. 

After the academic seminar "Banking and Financial Crisis", the second-year students were ỉntroduced to the topic "Students internship" by Ms. Tran Luc Thanh Tuyen - Lecturer of Faculty of Economics in order to address questions and concerns about the impending internship. The lecturer provided satisfactory answers to related queries regarding how to choose a topic for an internship report, how to write a report, how to find an appropriate training unit, etc. Following the lecturer's sharing, students felt more secure and confident about continuing on their educational route.
